BIOGRAPHICAL AND COLLECTION NOTES
By profession, Walter E. Babbitt was a fine antique dealer in Brewster, coming to the Cape in 1948 to form a partnership with Clifford Harrington. Their business was named Walclif. By avocation, Mr. Babbitt was a collector of historical manuscripts and a dedicated genealogist. The Town Clerk and Board of Selectmen of Brewster appointed him Archivist to the Commission for Preservation of Town Records. He was instrumental for ten years in preserving the records of the town. His interest in genealogy led him to do extensive genealogical research on many Cape Cod families. These records and many of the maritime collections in the Kittredge Maritime Collections were donated to Sturgis in 1989.
Among Mr. Babbitt's donations were boxes of his research notes that are included here, filed alphabetically by family name. There are a variety of materials here: original correspondence, genealogical charts and family trees with references to primary sources, newspapers clippings, copies of articles, photographs.
