SUBJECT & SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This ledger of copied deeds starts with an unverified genealogy of the Chase family descended from William Chase of England, who came to Massachusetts in the 1630s. The following pages document a genealogical line and constitute a title search from the 19th century to the early 20th century of pieces of land in Harwich on Herring Creek and Nantucket Sound. The deeds, some with accompanying plats, appear to have been copied by George L. Weekes, who owns the land in 1925, and sells it to William H. Doble in 1926. Perhaps the ledger is research done to clear the title - correspondence in the ledger indicates that Mr. Weekes is a lawyer in Boston.
There is no clear provenance record stating who donated the ledger to Sturgis Library, merely that a later owner of the volume was John H. Paine of Harwich.
