FY2023 Annual Report to Donors

Dear friends of Sturgis Library:

As you read the following report, I hope you will reflect upon all of the people who give Sturgis Library its energy and warmth, including our wonderfully welcoming staff members, our visitors and patrons of all ages, and you, our generous donors, whose contributions keep the Library at the forefront of community organizations on Cape Cod.

Your support during our fiscal year ended June 30, 2023 enabled Sturgis to continue offering an amazing assortment of books, eBooks, magazines, author talks and research materials, as well as many excellent programs for all members of our community. Highlights included a “Sketch and Breakfast” series of art lessons; a nighttime “Owl Prowl” with Mass Audubon, and a guided walk from Whelden Library to Sturgis.

In addition, while younger visitors enjoyed our weekly Storytime series and the Spritely Brightly Book Club, other guests immersed themselves in our six-part lecture series covering lesser-known aspects of American history. Topics covered by visiting professors and other experts included the difficult living conditions in Revolutionary-era Massachusetts, the maritime component of the Underground Railroad, and the evolution of the Black Freedom Movement in Boston.  On top of everything else, Sturgis Library wrapped up a major capital improvement project which gave our building a new red cedar shingle roof, improved exterior signage, and a new drainage system to capture exterior water run-off.

Our ability to deliver innovative programs and necessary capital investments is due in large part to the generosity of our individual donors, who provide a significant portion of the resources we need to fund the Library’s annual operations. While much of this support in Fiscal 2023 came from gifts to our Annual Appeal, we also received a boost from our highly successful “gourmet” tasting event in August of 2022. Sincere thanks to everyone who helped make “Wine, Cheese and Chocolate” such a success, including our volunteers, our sponsors, and everyone who bought a ticket or bid on an auction item. We are already thinking about what we can do for an encore!

Sincerely,
John Littlefield, President of the Board of Trustees

Sturgis Library is an independent nonprofit public library and research archive, not a Town department.  We receive less than half of our funding from the Town of Barnstable, and must raise the rest of our funds through donations, grants, event proceeds, bookshop sales, and other non-municipal sources.

Our donors give to the library in many ways:

  • Donations to our annual appeal
  • Bequests
  • Gifts of stock or securities
  • Gifts of vehicles through our vehicle donation program
  • Gifts of goods or services to our fundraisers
  • Donations of books, jewelry, and household items to our sales
  • Donations of family papers or historic materials to our research archives
  • Spontaneous donations in our donation boxes
  • Memorial and honorary donations
  • Gifts of time — volunteering for special Library projects or at Library events

Special Support

In addition to the Annual Fund donors listed in the next section of our annual report, Sturgis Library has received support from individuals, businesses, organizations, grantors, and others for a variety of needs throughout FY2023. With the help of these special donors we were able to purchase library materials,  to sponsor engaging programs, fund discount museum passes, maintain and preserve our historic building, and much more.  During our Wine Cheese and Chocolate event many generous donors pledged to support the Library. We received proceeds from the sale of donated vehicles, and honored family members and loved ones through memorial and honorary donations. We are also grateful for employer matching grant funds from a number of our generous donors.

If we inadvertently left you off the list of special donors or spelled your name incorrectly, please accept our apologies, and contact us at director@sturgislibrary.org so that we can correct our records. We thank all of our donors and supporters for their generous gifts to Sturgis Library.

1 thought on “FY2023 Annual Report to Donors”

  1. I congratulate all the folks who prepared this Annual Report to Donors. It is most gracious and highly appreciated that ALL donors were listed and thanked appropriately and publicly even though they received personal notes from the John Littlefield. In my view, the donors’ generosity confirms their commitment and appreciation to the Sturgis Library and its staff.
