RESCHEDULED TO JUNE Nation to Nation: Trade Commerce and Diplomacy Among Tribal Nations of New England

January 31, 2023 @ 6:00 pm 7:00 pm

This program has been rescheduled until June — we are having new carpeting installed in late January which will interfere with our program schedule.

Join native artist and registered member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, Hartman Deetz for his presentation on the historical and cultural significance of wampum. This discussion will explore the legal traditions of wampum belts as well as wampum as a means of economic exchange among the tribal nations of New England.

This lecture is part of Understanding Our History: A Lifelong Learner Series. This reading and lecture series explores little-known or often misunderstood topics in United States history. Participants can engage more fully with the lecture if they read the selected reading material ahead of time. Pick up the associated reading at the Library starting on January 3rd.

Stop by the Library anytime during the month of January to view a display of handcrafted wampum jewelry and belts designed by Mr. Deetz.
